Pulmonary Tuberculosis in Students at Seoul National University

|
Current status of pulmonary tuberculosis in students at Seoul National University was evaluated. Prevalence rate of radiologically active pulmonary tuberculosis in freshmen was about 2.3%, higher in male students than in female ones. Minimal pulmonary tuberculosis was most common form of the disease comprising about 81% of all affected persons, while moderately advanced form was less common(19%).
Annual cure rate was about 24% and 38% of all registered patients. were missed from our follow-up. Mean duration of anti tuberculosis medication was 13.5 months. Radiological improvement was most remarkable during initial 2~6 months, and most of our patients reached inactive state in 1.5~2 years of regular treatment. Documented treatment failure occurred in 16 patients, whose clinical, radiological and bacteriological findings disclosed drug resistance.
